Open Letter to Oklahoma Voters and Lawmakers

I am a teacher. I teach English at the high school of an independent district within Oklahoma City. I love my job. I love your kids. I call them my kids. I keep blankets in my room for when they’re cold. I feed them peanut butter crackers, beef jerky, or Pop Tarts when Michelle Obama’s school breakfast or lunch isn’t enough to fill their bellies. I comfort them when they cry and I praise them when they do well and always I try to make them believe that they are somebody with unlimited potential no matter what they go home to when they leave me.

What do they go home to? Sometimes when they get sick at school they can’t go home because you and the person you’re currently shacking up with are too stoned to figure out it’s your phone ringing. Sometimes they go home to parents who don’t notice them, and those are often the lucky kids. Sometimes they go home to sleep on the neighbor’s back porch because your boyfriend kicked them out of the house and his dog is too mean to let them sleep on their own back porch. They go home to physical and verbal abuse. They go home looking for love and acceptance from the people who created them … and too often they don’t find it.

Many days your children bring the resentment they feel toward you to school with them and they act out against peers, property, or their teachers. When I call you I’m told, “When he’s at school he’s your problem.” Or you beat them, not for what they did, but because it embarrassed or inconvenienced you when I called.

Often, they stay at school with me for an hour and a half after the bell rings because they don’t want to go home to you. Reluctantly, they get on the two buses meant to take home students who stay for athletic practice, and they go away for a dark night in places I can’t imagine.

Over 90 percent of the kids in my high school are on the free or reduced lunch programs. The walk hand-in-hand with Poverty and its brother Violence. They find comfort in the arms of your lover, Addiction. They make babies before they are old enough to vote. Or drive. And they continue the cycle you put them in.

Sometimes I get through to a student and convince her that education is the way out of this spiral of poverty and despair. Then you slap them down for wanting to be better than you.

And you, the lawmakers of this state, you encourage it. I hold two college degrees and have been on my job for 10 years. I was our school’s Teacher of the Year in 2014. I teach kids to read the ballots that keep you in your elite position. I teach them to look behind your lies and rhetoric. I teach them to think for  themselves. The compensation of me and my colleagues ranks 49th in the nation, and is the lowest in our region. I currently earn about $18,000 per year less than I did in 2002, my last year as an office worker for an energy company that merged with another and eliminated my job. I feel like my life has purpose now, but, as I turn 50 this year and wonder how I’ll put my own high school-age kids through college, I have to consider giving up helping scores of kids per year so I can afford to give my own children what they need to find satisfaction in their lives.

And what do you do? You whittle away at education funding. You waste the taxpayers’ money so that our great state faces unbelievable shortfalls and massive budget cuts. You take home a salary that ranks 10th highest in the nation among state legislators and you are inept, uncaring, and an abomination to our democratic form of government.

Those kids who stay after school with me? After Spring Break 2016 they can’t do that. You see, our district can no longer afford to pay to run those late buses. Your kids wade through garbage in the halls because we had to release the custodial crew that cleaned at night. Oh sure, we could make the kids clean up after themselves, except our administrators live in fear of lawsuits, and making a kid pick up the lunch tray he threw on the floor has been considered forced child labor. There’s also the very real possibility that a belligerent kid will just take a swing at one of us — again — because he or she wasn’t taught respect for authority at home. Did I mention how we had to let go of our security officers because we could no longer afford them? We now share one single solitary Oklahoma County Sheriff’s deputy with our ninth grade center and our middle school and alternative school. That’s one deputy for about 1,300 students.

We can no longer afford rolls of colored paper or paint or tape to make signs to support and advertise our Student Council activities. This fall our football team won’t charge through a decorated banner as they take the field because we can’t afford to make the banner. There won’t be any new textbooks in the foreseeable future. Broken desks won’t be replaced. We’re about to ration copy paper and we’ve already had the desktop printers taken out of our rooms.

We live in fear that our colleagues will leave us, not just because they are our friends, but because the district wouldn’t replace them even if we could lure new teachers to our inner-city schools during the teacher shortage you have caused. We fear our classes doubling in size.

We fear becoming as ineffective as you are. Not because we can’t or won’t do our job, like you, but because you keep passing mandates to make us better while taking away all the resources we need just to maintain the status quo. We fear that our second jobs will prevent us from grading the papers or creating the lesson plans we already have to do from home. We fear our families will leave us because we don’t have time for them.

I am the chairman of my department. My teachers could easily take other jobs in the private sector where they would make more money, but so far they have chosen to remain teachers because they love working with kids. How long will they continue to put the needs of students over the needs of family? It’s something we’re all dealing with. How far will you push us? What will you do without us when we leave the classroom or leave the state? It’s happening. You know it’s happening, and yet you do nothing.

You, the representatives, senators, and governor of Oklahoma are creating a population of ignorant peasants fit only to work in the oil field and factories you bring to this state by promising those businesses won’t have to pay their fair share of taxes. You leave our kids in a cycle of poverty and abuse while your pet donor oil companies destroy the bedrock beneath us, shaking our homes to pieces while you deny your part in all of it.

Parents, I beg you to love your children the way we love your children. Vote for people who will help teachers educate and nurture the kids we share. We can’t do it alone anymore.

  1. Exactly what proof do you have for your position?
Yep, thought so. You have none

    1. Dear Mr Breen, pull your head from under the sand! My wife is a High School councilor in SC and as far as Mr Wedel’s observations and experiences with students is concerned, they are a mirror image of many here in SC. Tory ideology is happy when funds for education are minimized and bury their heads in the sand, totally ignoring the consequences resulting from this. Mr Wedel’s proof is his daily living the tragedy. Where is your heart Mr Breen? Do your children or children known to you go hungry Mr Breen?

      1. No child is going hungry. The funds and freebies are in place to preclude this
The problem is a lack of will, not money.
Child abuse is not adequately reported by the schools and other organizations.
When it is reported, nothing remotely effective occurs. The problem is made worse by allowing those with major cultural differences to ours to illegally come to this country.
This places an unnecessary burden on the social welfare network

        1. What experience to you have Mr Breen, to be able to make such sweeping accusations ?

          1. Give a call to your PD and ask. Call SS and ask how many repeat abuse cases they deal with. My experience is first hand

        2. I live in Oklahoma and his letter is spot on. Unless you have walked the halls of the schools in this state and see the struggle , then close your pie hole. I know several teachers is this position.

    2. I’m leaving education. You can have my job. Oh, you don’t have a college education, three degrees?

      It’s all yours.

Linda Speirs – may I assume you are questioning the jerk above you, Breen. I cannot imagine anyone hating children as much as he does. It is obvious from his first spurt of ranting that he is probably also disliked by kids. He is one sad situation all by himself. Thank you for responding, but, please, if al all possible, do not leave education. It, and we, need people like you.

    3. Clearly your not a teacher, married to a teacher, dating a teacher or know a teacher. Suggest you volunteer at an inter city school. Me….married to a teacher!

    4. It seems Mr. Breen himself is another example of the failed education system. He believes his own propaganda more than he believes in reality. He appears to value hate more than compassion. He appears to have no understanding of anyone whose circumstances vary from those he has experienced. He appears to see only the mole-hills that support his deep seated anger while being blind to the mountains that invalidate it. His posts suggest he warps and twists whatever he hears or sees to fit his beliefs rather than adjusting his beliefs to fit reality. In my opinion he seems to be both a symptom and a cause of the issues Mr Wedel has highlighted. Quite sad.

  2. Thank you Mr. Wedel for the love, kindness and encouragement you give our children. I am sharing this stirring letter and please, please continue your work. Our children need you. The best and love to and your family.

  3. Keep doing your best at this time. You may not believe it, this inept lawmakers will be out of office soon before you know it. It may just be too late at that time to make a difference in the lives of many of your, our kids; however, we are all called to do our best at whatever occupation we thrive in. Never give up; never allow those recalcitrant in Oklahoma City Capitol get the best of you. They will never know how far you’ve come; and hardly understand how far you’ve got to go; neither, where you are heading, for they’ve never been part of the equation. I feel your pain and can relate to it as we speak. Continue to give of your best as you can, the battle is not always for the bravest; but for those who resist tyranny and ineptitude behavior of many who are expected to care but often shack in their responsibility. Continue to work hard at whatever you know is truth, just and right; and you know what, victory will be yours and those inconsequential lawmakers will be history, irrelevant and worthless in the passing of time and grand scheme of life. Victory is yours and you will win big someday. I’ve seen it in my own life; I’ve experienced it as a former teacher and know your students deserve teachers like you; who are often diamonds in the rough. I love you and will always respect your candor in this piece. You are one of the teachers my mother says impact and change the world for the better. Keep on trucking; for no one can beat your honesty and transparency, for they know not what they mean or are!

  4. this happened today. just another example proving my point to take the known unruly students out of the school least this type of event occurs.

Note that the kids that wanted to learn are deprived of two days to do so.

When if ever is common sense going to prevail?

A brawl that erupted at a high school cafeteria in Ohio Tuesday forced police to deploy pepper spray as officials canceled classes for the rest of the day and Wednesday, local media report.

Police handcuffed at least six people at East High School in Youngstown, according to WKBN.

It’s not clear what sparked the fight. The school has come under increased scrutiny over trouble disciplining students, The Youngstown Vindicator adds.

Police said they helped get the brawl under control by locking students and staff in classrooms. Some students complained about the pepper spray, but there were no reports of anybody seriously hurt.

Superintendent Steve Stohla told reporters the school would close Wednesday in part to give everyone a chance to calm down. He said it came on the advice of police.

Youngstown is approximately 70 miles southeast of Cleveland.

      Mr. Breen,
All children deserve an education, not just your kids. Are there discipline problems at times, yes…all the more reason to quit cutting funding to schools. Just remember that many of the ‘discipline problems’ come from the ‘well-bred, well-fed, well-financed’ bullies that think it is OK to harass their fellow students who are hungry, have few clothes and may even sleep on the streets because they are afraid to go home or maybe don’t have a home to go to…
Instead of continuing to look down on, or criticize, someone who knows what is really happening, maybe you could just be quiet…you have no idea how difficult it is to be a teacher in this country. An educated population is a threat to those who would wish to be the ruling class while all of the rest of us would wallow in squalor as we contribute to making the rich richer. So. to keep from having an educated population, many of the illustrious, conservative governors and their minions in state legislators must destroy the schools. I am thankful that there are teachers who are willing to work for little pay just because they love their chosen profession and ‘their’ kids!

Mr. Wedel, I am a parent of a first grader and a seventh grader. After reading your blog, it is my prayer that my kids’ teachers are at least half as dedicated to them as you are to your students. Yes, my children are lucky in that they have very loving homes. However, I hope they get that living support at school as well. Also, unfortunately, not all of their classmates have the good fortune of the families they do. So, I thank you for the sacrifices that you and your family shouldn’t have to make, but do! You are a true hero!

  6. I’m with you. Thank you for speaking up.

Mr. Wedel, I was born and raised in oklahoma. Everybody, not just in oklahoma; but throughout the u.s. need to read your story. It is such a tragedy that in oklahoma the so-called lawmakers, can’t see what they are doing to the state. I graduated in 86 from a high school in Tulsa. They were fighting for up to date school books then.. Instead of complaining… I want to offer you this, children are blessed to have you as a amazing, loving educator. Please know that things are going to change. Thank you.

  8. Mr. Wedel, I thank you for your devotion to your students. I am a former teacher in Idaho and I just want you to know that you are not alone. And, it’s not just students threatening teachers; even teachers are turning on each other in order to protect themselves and their families. Administrators turn against their own teachers to try to force compliance with regulations made by legislators who have never even been in a classroom since high school or college, much less tried to actually teach a classroom full of students. If education of our children is not made a priority in our governments — both state and federal –, philosophically and monetarily, then this country had better start building lots more rehab centers, prisons and, ultimately, morgues and cemeteries. My heart aches for the children.

The Republican Christian Party — because it represents only white racists (and the mega-wealthy) has adopted the policy of undermining, and then abolishing public education.

If our kids were taught the truth about our government — Bernie Sanders would win in a landslide.

    1. Oh please you sound so ignorant. Show your proof. The truth? the truth is socialism has never worked anywhere.
Poor Bernie needs to retire to China, Russia or Cuba.

      1. Uh, Mr. Breen? Here are countries that are “failing” under Socialist systems: Finland, Belgium, Ireland, Norway, Canada, Denmark, Sweden, etc. Finland is #1 in education, since we’re on the topic, and for over ten years, the Nordic countries have rated as having the highest quality of life in the world, and it’s not because of the weather. Notice how no one messes with Canada? Who hates Canadians? No why? Because when capitalism cannot make slaves of its own work force (literally and then figuratively), they make slaves out of others on others’ lands. This isn’t the sole reason why we are despised by so much of the international community, but it’s a big one. In fact, the only Socialist country that is frightening is China, and while they profess to be socialists, they aren’t quite. What is/has failed, and never really was set up for the masses, is capitalism; in case you did not notice, Goldman Sachs, the Koch bros., the Walton family (Walmart), etc., are the capitalist elite. Two of these, and arguably all, are criminally responsible for the recession–oh and while we are at it: Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Socialist policies are what lifted us out of the Depression. By the way, I am an English teacher who has found out that my (used-to-be) wealthy, strong school district will have a student population in which 35% of them live below the poverty line. As for your insults regarding illegal immigrants, cayate (which means shut up; quite shameful that the average American knows only one language when others know at least two). You lack empathy and perhaps lack the sort of enlightening, proper education you deserved and that we teachers work hard to give our students despite all the forces working against us. Now, back to grading…

        1. wow a follower of Lenin who quotes made up facts and history.

The USA is capitalist. It has the worlds largest economy and middle class.
My degrees include economics. Sadly English provides no understanding of how economies work. Perhaps you may wish to return to school

The last recession was the direct result of the housing bubble which was the direct result of the Socialist policy of forcing banks to provide loans to millions who could not afford them.

Mess with Canada. Oh my you mean the nation protected 100% BY THE USA AND GREAT BRITIAN.

YOU MEAN THE COUNTRY WHERE PEOPLE COME HERE FOR TOP MEDICAL CARE.

NOBODY MESSES WITH ANYONE IN MEXICO OR THE ENTIRE SOUTH AMERICA EITHER

YOU DIDNT MENTION RUSSIA, CUBA OR MOST OF THE AFRICAN NATIONS, INCLUDING SOUTH AFRICA POST BRITISH RULE

YOU DIDNT MENTION HOW SOCIALISM FAILED OUR FOREFATHERS UPON ARRIVING HERE.

SORRY, BUT YOUR RANT IS WHAT IT IS, LIBERAL NONSENSE AND REVISIONIST HISTORY

          1. No point in trying to argue with Mr. Breen. From his very first comment to his very last, he clearly proves he didn’t read or understand the concept of this blog post. All he seems to want to do is point fingers at the “illegals” (“The problem is made worse by allowing those with major cultural differences to ours to illegally come to this country.”) and problematic children who should just be taken out of schools (“take the known unruly students out of the school least this type of event occurs”). And where are we going to put them exactly? Back into their abusive homes? Back into their loads of poverty? Just leave them on the streets uneducated, mistreated, uncared about like rodents? Aside from that, it is clear that Mr. Breen is not only a conservative, but one whose nose is right up Mr. Trump’s behind. The capslock in your attempt at an educated defense against the comment about Bernie Sanders made this loud and clear…pardon me, LOUD AND CLEAR. It seems it’s easier for you to just sit there and point the finger at socialist failures instead of looking to their successes around the globe. It’s easier to ignore the fact that yes, the nations Majy listed in fact DO have a better quality of life, higher quality and functioning systems of education and are ALL ranked among the top 10 happiest nations in the world (excluding Ireland, including New Zealand). And in case “happiest nations” means nothing to you, as it usually does to very selfish, narrow-minded, money-hungry individuals, it actually takes into account longer life expectancies, more social support, MORE FREEDOM TO MAKE LIFE CHOICES, lower perceptions of corruption, more generosity, less inequality of happiness and a higher gross domestic product per capita. But hell, a failure to implement socialist policy by a President, who he nor the GOP administration following his terms cared to actually think through, most definitely means our nation is incapable and would die at the hands of STRATEGICALLY replicating or learning from the successes of these other nations because they are socialist.

We get it, Mr. Breen. You give zero fucks about the children in our nation nor the education system in America. Point made.

Maybe that’s where you need to go to spew your vicious venom of hatred. I really think this is the only way you can get any attention. Well, you’re getting it but it is eventually going to bite you in the rear. Being so evil, you might not feel it. I am going to do for you what you are failing to do for these kids and the teachers PRAY!!!!! 🙂

    2. The Republican Christian party ? Bernie Sanders ? William , kids should be taught the truth about government. They should be taught that the liberal left and their policies are whats destroying this country. Bernie Sanders is a fool and a nut case.Everything for free > Nothing is for free. Socialism only works in 2 places, Heaven where it’s not needed and hell where they already have it. ,

  10. I want to get behind this, but I find myself really caught up in the anti-woman language you’re using. I’m all for shining a light on crappy parenting, but the first part of this letter seems to be written solely to MOTHERS, accusing them of prioritizing shitty boyfriends over their kids. No reference at all to FATHERS- absent, abusive, or otherwise. “Michelle Obama’s” meals aren’t sufficient. How about “the federally subsidized free meal program” isn’t sufficient. And then, when you mention a promising female student, you imply that it’s her mother who is competing with her.

I’d have an easier time supporting your message if you weren’t being so sexist.

    1. “Sometimes they go home to sleep on the neighbor’s back porch because your boyfriend kicked them out of the house and his dog is too mean to let them sleep on their own back porch.”

And fathers can’t have boyfriends?? That’s a bit sexist of you to imply!

And sometimes as a writer, it’s easier to call something by a name which paints a clearer picture for people than one that sounds politically correct. Calling them Michele Obama’s meals gives people a clear idea of which ones he’s referring to, as she’s a huge advocate in education, healthy eating and providing meals for kids. No need to refer to it cut and dry as the federally subsidized free meal program. By implying that adding Mrs. Obama’s name is sexist, you’re in fact being sexist yourself.

A teacher like him who cares for all his students has no time for sexist bullshit. You think he only has a classroom of boys? You think he only wants to garner change for male students?

I’d say before pointing the “sexist” finger, make sure your accusations and implications aren’t sexist themselves.

I wholeheartedly agree and the fact that he named Mrs. Obama almost stopped me from finishing his letter. I do have to commend him because his letter, unfortunately, is right on target. As you pointed out, she is so much behind giving our children wholesome foods and should not be made to look like it’s something bad or useless. After all, she is not at the schools to see what they are doing one she has initiated her programs. Still, his letter is viable.

  11. I live in upstate New York. I am not a teacher. I understand your fear.our children are our most valuable commodity . Without them our future is pretty bleak. I only hope and pray that we find the right way to correct this.

  12. Mr. Wedel…I am a student at St. Petersburg College in Florida. My long term goal is to become a teacher at a later age in life. My children are grown and I have two grandsons and another on the way. Your letter really tells it like it is. Everything that you spoke of we are learning about it class. From budget cuts to free meals to homeless children. You are what teaching is all about, and you are an inspiration to many. Thank God that these students have you in their lives. I have never responded to an internet story, but I just had to thank you for all that you do. Please, please stay their for the students that you have and your future students. They need you. Again, thank you.

  13. Dear Teacher Wedel,
Your letter made a difference, an awareness, to a lot of people! There’s guilt for some, for others who have been in denial, it’s in their face! And, for lots of others, it’s relief, as too many want to speak up, but don’t know how! Every word you have written is totally true, not just where you live, but sadly all over our country! And, the biggest losers are the kids! I’m a retired teacher, we know! God Bless you!

    Thank you!

  16. I am a Detroit Public School Teacher of ten years and a teacher of 30 years. Reading your post aloud to my husband brought tears to my eyes because I identify with you completely. We are losing people week by week as they are leave their teaching jobs. I can’t deal with the disrespect of strangers that reprimand me because they tell me to my face that teachers make too much. I too make less because I had to give my earnings back to the district and the State of Michigan because they are broke. I am currently facing payless work because politicians can’t agree to support education. The government appointed Emergency Managers that have taken over these past nine years have blindly spent without foresight, creating a budget deficit that is widening daily. Before Emergency Managers, our budget was in the black. Now we are paying more for debt than it costs to run the district. The government took over because they thought they could do a better job and Detroit didn’t have the ability to get things right.

What that has given us is classrooms that have walls crumbling, paint chips and plaster falling down on our desks, ceiling leaking when it rains, hot, brown, dirty water that comes out of one working drinking fountain. We deal with broken drinking fountain pipes left broken for years that spew sewage fumes throughout the halls and entering my class. Rats, mice, cockroaches that were “taken care of” years ago by putting a box behind the radiator that is still there. I have to clean our desks with disenfectant where I find mice droppings each morning.

I told my co-worker that I feel like the cello player on the Titanic. The string group played to sooth the mass hysteria as eminent destruction loomed. The gentlemen agreed that the time to play was done. As they walked away, one lone player shouldered his instrument and bowed a sad note. The others returned and the group continued their sad song. My friend replied, “I’m the one handcuffed to the pipe and they won’t unlock the doors to let me out.”

Let me out. Legislatures can take over and sit at my broken desk on my broken chair.

    1. TAKE A LOOK WHO HAS BEEN IN CHARGE OF DETROIT AND ITS SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR THE PAST 30 YEARS — LIBS.

THE SITUATION YOU DESCRIBE TOTALLY THE RESULT OF THESE POLICIES

  17. Thank you for speaking out so eloquently. It is much the same in New york. Your students are lucky that you are their teacher!

  18. Omg!! Amen!! Thank you for being a teacher👍. I can only imagine how these larger schools survive when the smaller one’s struggle as well. I’m hardcore pro education. I watch over my sons’ education and continually praise their academic endeavors. I know there are children who go home to places and parents as you described, and it’s sickening. Unfortunately, we can’t control who can become a parent. I’m so very thankful that my boys have a good school and a good home to go home too. Thank you for speaking up for teachers and students everywhere!!

  19. I graduated high school from Elgin OK in 2002. I feel like I received a great education. Since then, I have watched as education has been devalued in my home state.I graduated from Cameron University in 2008. I was intent on becoming a social worker. I was aware the pay was barely livable but after talking with a group of ladies from Ardmore and a man in Lawton in the field I became aware of a severe shortage and a state unwilling to hire and provide these desperately needed services. I enlisted in the USA and have faithfully served. 3 years ago I took a commission and returned to my home stationed at Altus AFB. I hoped to enroll my children in the local school system but things have changed…I visited the school while volunteering and I found text books for children written before I graduated high school, computers operating on outdated operating systems, broken furniture, a dilapidated building, and teachers who have generally given up. My wife and I have chosen to home school my children until I am stationed in a state that better supports education. I am very proud of the heritage of Oklahoma we have beautiful land, beautiful industry, and beautiful people. As an Oklahoman, I am ashamed to see how we have devalued education in the last 10 years. I truly fear that we have allowed politicians to run wild for such a long time now that we are on an irreparable road which is held hostage by special interests and powerful companies who have our elected officials on their pockets. I fear that I can never own property in this great state because of our seemingly endless stream of wastewater being pumped into the ground to secure natural gas will destroy anything I gain for my family. I fear my parents will be in harms way because the spread of Lawton’s failing education system is pushing into the surrounding counties increasing crime and drug use. I have been in the company of individuals who have influenced the state in the direction we are going. They are for all purposes untouchable and operate as such. We will never be great while we fail to stand on great ideals. When we stand on extreme platforms of personal wealth we cannot support any public service including education.
