Going PG-13

I’ve told a few classes that when I’m not doing substitute teaching I write horror fiction. There are then usually a few students who want to know more. There’s a good chance some of them might eventually end up reading this blog. (Maybe one’s reading right now.) At any rate, profane rants are hardly professional discourse, anyway, so I’m going to make a real effort to keep this blog at about a PG-13 level from now on. No need to risk having parents calling school districts to complain that one of the substitute teachers was cussing in his blog. (Though it’s unlikely I could use any word here I haven’t already heard in a classroom the past couple of weeks.)

I was back among high schoolers today. We watched a Nova video on buckyballs. I got to hear the tape five times. And I still couldn’t tell you what the … [expletive] a buckyball is. Science was never my thing. In this case, not having any other job for today, I accepted the science assignment because I knew it was just loading the VCR. Tomorrow I’m back at the same high school to teach agriculture. Hey, my grandparents use to own a dairy farm.

In other news, I’ve finally crawled out from under the bulk of some freelance work. I felt like I was drowning in it there for a while. That’s not a bad thing, particularly since so much of the work was for the client who pays the most. I still have one piece due. I should have done it today, but the guys I need to interview had car trouble. Once that’s out of the way I can finally get back to working on some fiction.

FenCon is this weekend. Hard to believe it’s already here. Unless a bag of money falls from the sky so I can go to World Fantasy Convention, FenCon probably will be my last convention this season. I hope to see you there.

I will be at Scare on the Square in Enid on Oct. 28, though.

I’m also working with Full Circle Books for a signing. It looks like it will probably  happen Dec. 16 at 3 p.m. I’ll update with links when it’s confirmed. And I’m still hopeful about some signings with Craig Wolf during October, though most of the inquiries I’ve made have been like yelling into a black hole.

  1. This is why I don’t tell my students anything about my personal life. Started out that way from day one in the public schools. Only a handful know that I write, and even fewer know WHAT I write. That way I can rant online to my heart’s content. 😎
