Unwind by Neal Shusterman

It took me a little while to get into this one. In the first third of the book Shusterman really overused the word “bolt.” Everyone was on the verge of bolting here or bolting there. It’s a small thing, maybe, but it annoyed me. Also, I found the coincidence of Connor, Risa, and Lev just coincidentally meeting like they did on the highway to be a bit much to swallow.

After that, however, the book really picks up steam and I found myself reading much later at night than I should have. Shusterman did a fantastic job pacing the story and developing characters it was easy to care about, particularly Connor and Risa. The time gap with Lev was a bit bothersome, something I guess he’s addressed in an add-on novella. I was surprised to find myself caring so much when … Well, when one distasteful character was unwound. With virtually no scientific detail, Shusterman makes the reader feel the horror and loneliness of this abominable act.

The book felt like it had closure, so I’m interested to see if a series is justified or an attempt to capitalize on a successful story. Be that as it may, Unwind is definitely a book worth reading.
