Beowulf by Burton Raffel

I love Beowulf. I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve read it over the years I’ve taught senior English. I like it so much, though, that I almost always read it myself rather than letting the kids butcher it.

It gets four instead of five stars mostly for the interfering monk who tried to make it a Christian story, and for the sudden rambling side stories about heroes and kings from before Beowulf’s time.
