The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Most of the students had read this one, and several of my co-workers, and the premise sounded interesting, so I decided to give it a try. I’m very glad I did! This is the best book I’ve read so far this year. It wasn’t perfect; a few things seemed to come a little too easily for Katniss, but overall it was a really fun read and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
One thing I have to comment on was the grosling Katniss killed and ate during the game. She commented once that it was all gone, but then she kept eating it for a few chapters afterward. That took me out of the story a little every time.
Collins did a great job with the ending. It’s very frustrating and I can’t imagine how people didn’t go berserk when the book first came out and they had to wait a year to pick up the story.
Don’t push this one aside thinking it’s another Twilight. The writing is very good, the story engaging, and the characters well developed.
