Review: The Road

The Road
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Wow. I just finished this book moments ago. It’s an incredibly bleak but moving story about a father and son in a post-apocalypse wasteland. McCarthy doesn’t tell us what happened to the world, it simply is desolate, with roving bands of cannibals and lonely, starving people. The relationship between the father and son is intense and painful at times, maybe more so because I have a little boy about that age. This was the first book I’ve read by McCarthy, but it won’t be the last.

!!!!!!!!POSSIBLE SPOILER!!!!!!!

You know pretty early on how the story will end, but when that ending comes it will crush you, anyway. My gosh, McCarthy wrung every possible drop of emotion out of that scene and I wanted to hate him for what he was doing, but it was just too good.

  1. Some people didn’t like the writing style McCarthy used in the book, but I absolutely loved it… great read, and the movie wasn’t half bad, either…

    1. I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I’m going to see if I can find it this weekend.

      1. The only bad thing about the movie was that they changed the ending… in the movie they start this huge brawl and it spills over into the studio parking lot and the cops come…

Or that might’ve been the ending to Blazing Saddles, don’t remember which…
