Mortality sucks

One of our students died late last month. Brooke Haley had been fighting ovarian cancer for quite a while and, friends say, she was in a lot of pain at the end. She was 23 years old, a former Miss OCU and third runner up in the Miss Oklahoma Pageant in 2003. Her major was mass communications. I only spoke to her once, but she seemed to be a very nice person. One of our former work studies was one of her best friends, so I got to feel like I knew Brooke through the updates Kristen provided. Here’s a link to a story in Brooke’s hometown paper; it isn’t the most professional piece of journalism, but since it’s her hometown paper I thought it was the best link.

The only good to come out of this is that Brooke’s sorority sisters are going to found the first state chapter of an ovarian cancer awareness group. We’ll be having a memorial service in the campus chapel tomorrow.

I tell ya, stuff like this makes you look at your kids in a different way. It reminds you how lucky you are to have every day with them, no matter how much they misbehave.
