Still pulling double duty

Late to work today. Kim’s uncle died so she went to the funeral in Enid. I’m home waiting to take Sara to school before I leave for work.

Yesterday didn’t go as planned. My department was pulled in to the VP’s office for the meeting we’d been expecting. It was Feb. 1, the day he was supposed to let us know how the department would be restructured in the continued absence of my direct supervisor. So, what did he do? Tell us things would continue as they are, possibly until June 30. This was not good news. We have four major speakers coming to campus in successive weeks beginning March 30. That means I have to write the text and oversee the design of the posters, postcards, advertising, etc. and do all the PR for those events, on top of whatever smaller jobs come up.

Immediately after the VP meeting, there was … friction between the senior graphic designer and the junior graphic designer. I didn’t have the authority to take care of it, so back to the VP’s office I had to go to explain what was going on and suggest a plan to fix it.

I am really, really unhappy with the thought of continuing to do two director-level jobs for the next five months with no additional pay and without the authority that comes with one of those jobs. Perhaps I’ll go have another private meeting with him today and point that part out to him.

  1. Sorry to hear about Kim’s Uncle.
Steve, without a doubt, you need to talk with the VP. Doing the work of two people without an adjustment to your salary, or authority to make a judgment call? Come on now, what’s up with that? It’s not even something that should be taken under consideration. It’s what you deserve. The least they could do for expecting this of you.

    1. Well, I did that today. Didn’t do any good. In fact, he told me more things that may actually be bad for me in the long run. My push to centralize our public relations staff may come back to bite me in the title, I guess.

  2. Send Kim warmest thoughts from both G and I, I’m very sorry to hear that.
As for your job, you know what you can do about it, and you are, and I wish there was a way I could help you. Y’know, making calls and such annoying shit like that.
    Hang in there.
