Review: Fire and Ash

Fire and Ash
Fire and Ash by Jonathan Maberry
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I can’t remember the last time I read through an entire series so fast. All four books in just about two months, with a couple of other books thrown in. That’s pretty fast for me. Despite that, as I’ve said with the previous three books, I wasn’t very impressed with the series.

Don’t get me wrong, there was some good stuff. Like so many others, I really enjoy a good apocalyptic story. And I suspect that a whole lot of my issues with this series should really be blamed on the audio book narrator. He really just wasn’t very good. The voices for the kids often came across as surprised or questioning or just dumb when none of those were appropriate. But also, I got tired of Benny’s whining and doing such obviously stupid things. He finally matured in this book, but then he was suddenly a great military tactician.

Overall, it was a good adventure. I’m not sorry I went on it, but it wasn’t very challenging for me or for Benny, who always had somebody there to bail him out.
